<description>Instructions for Becoming Modern: Eight Ways to Get on with Your Manchu Queue
Experimental visual essay / handmade zine
2026

Instructions for Becoming Modern is a visual essay in the form of a fictional manual built from late Qing and early Republican image archives, including studio portraits, colonial and anthropometric photographs, tabloid illustrations, and newspaper images. The work interrogates the visual politics of Chinese modernity embodied in the Manchu queue, from means of state sovereignty to colonial re-signification and its uneasy afterlives. It actively engages with the queue as a visual and semiotic field where different forms of historical pain converge: conquest, obedience, humiliation, racial typology, bodily discipline, reform, and the uneasy demand-desire to become modern.
This work has been selected for the 2026&#38;nbsp;Anthropolitan print magazine. Link to the work on the Anthropolitan website.

Characters

Karagiozis:

A clever and mischievous trickster with a talent for getting himself into (and out of) ridiculous situations. He embarks on a wild journey to find treasure.

Hadjiavatis:

Karagiozis’ long-suffering friend, who often falls victim to Karagiozis’ wild schemes.

The Talking Tree-Snake:

A mysterious entity that Karagiozis encounters on his journey. Though appearing as a golden snake, the creature insists it is actually the talking tree mentioned in the note.

The Dragon:

A tired, melancholy dragon who has spent millennia guarding a golden apple.

The 56-Headed Snake:

A terrifying hydra-like creature guarding the passage to the universe’s edge.

The Moon:

A serene and mysterious presence who &#38;nbsp;provides Karagiozis with the key to the treasure chest, though her advice is often lost on Karagiozis.

Suriyel:

A celestial angel, glowing with ethereal light, who holds fast to the strict rules of cosmic etiquette.

Act 1

Scene 1: A Note from the East

(Karagiozis steps out of his shabby hut, stretching and looking up at the sky.)

Karagiozis:

'What a glorious day this is! I’ll hatch a clever plan to earn two coins, feast like a king, drink to my heart’s content, and then sleep soundly... on an empty stomach. But wait, what’s this strange piece of paper on the ground?'

(He picks up the note and reads it aloud.)

Note:

'I know you have always yearned for riches. Head eastward, my friend. Go to the very edge of the world, to where the sun first kisses the earth. There you will find a tree that speaks, and she will light your path. Follow her, and you shall possess all the treasures in this world. You will buy every house there is, and fill them with the finest of furnishings.'

-- From your mysterious friend, an anonymous angel

Karagiozis: (eyes wide, almost dancing with excitement)

'An angel! Could it be? Has Lady Luck finally decided to drop by for a visit?'

(grinning wildly)

'I’m going to be the richest man in the world! I’ll own every house, every chair, every table! I’ll be the King of Furniture!'

(Karagiozis, filled with excitement, grabs the note and rushes to his friend Hadjiavatis' door, eager to share the good news.)

Karagiozis: (knocking loudly and shouting)

'Hadjiavatis! Open up! I’ve got the best news in the world, the best news you’ve ever heard!'

Hadjiavatis: (from inside, not opening the door)

'What now, Karagiozis? What’s the latest scheme? Are you here to tell me another tall tale?'

Karagiozis:

'This time it’s real! We’re going to be rich! I’ve got a message from an angel, and we’re going to get more wealth than you can imagine!'

Hadjiavatis: (grumbling, clearly annoyed)

'Oh really? You expect me to believe that? The last time you said that, we lost 500 pounds at the horse races! That was every penny we earned after months of hard work!'

Karagiozis:

'Forget the horse races, Hadjiavatis! This is different! This came straight from a divine source! Join me on this adventure, and we’ll be rolling in gold and swimming in luxury!'

Hadjiavatis:

'If you don’t leave right now, I’ll come out there and stuff your head into your stomach, and tear those rags you call clothes to shreds!'

Karagiozis: (shrugging dramatically)

'Alright, fine! Don’t say I didn’t warn you! When I’m the richest man in the world, you won’t even be allowed to talk to me!'

(he mutters as he walks off)

'Honestly, some people just don’t appreciate a good opportunity…'

(Karagiozis marches off, determined, heading east.)

Karagiozis:

'The east, huh? Well, if the treasure’s not there, at least I’ll get a nice tan.'

Scene 2: The Talking Tree

Karagiozis:

'East, east! Don’t angels have cartographers in their world? Where am I supposed to go?'

(looking around frantically)

'Great, am I about to get lost in this jungle? If only I had a map. Or a snack. Or a snack with a map!'

A mysterious voice:

'Hello.'

Karagiozis: (jumping back in shock)

'Ah!'

(He looks up to see a giant, golden snake coiled in the tree.)

'This… is definitely the biggest snake I’ve ever seen. And the first one I’ve seen that talks!'

Talking Snake: (laughing lightly)

'My friend, there are many things you haven’t seen yet. You’re going to encounter much stranger things on your journey.'

Karagiozis: (raising an eyebrow)

'Stranger than a giant talking snake? That’s a pretty high bar. What’s next, a dancing rock? A singing fish?'

(he waves the note in the air)

'Do you know what this is about? I found this note, and it says if I find a talking tree, I’ll become the richest man in the world.'

Talking Snake:

'Well, my friend, I am that talking tree. The note was from my angel friend Suriyel.'

Karagiozis: (pausing, looking the snake up and down)

'Wait, you’re the tree? But you’re a snake! And snakes, in my experience, are not trees.'

(he mutters to himself)

'Is this some kind of cosmic joke?'

Talking Snake:

'Ah, don’t get stuck on the details! The world is full of things that don’t make sense. I mean, have you ever wondered why a boat floats?'

Karagiozis: (scratching his head)

'Well… no, but now that you mention it…'

Talking Snake: (interrupting, using its tail to scratch its own head)

'Think of it this way: me and this tree are a package deal. From a broader perspective, we’re a talking tree. You just got the snake part.'

Karagiozis: (grumbling, still skeptical)

'Alright, alright… it sounds crazy, but I suppose I’ve seen crazier things today. So, tell me, oh great talking snake-tree, how do I get all the wealth in the world?'

Talking Tree-Snake:

'Ah, that’s easy. Just keep heading east, all the way to the end of the world. There, you’ll meet a dragon. Defeat the dragon, and you’ll get a boat. Sail that boat to the very edge of the universe. That’s where the real fun begins! You’ll have to beat a 56-headed snake, and once you do that, the Moon Goddess will give you a key. Bring that key back here, and the angel will help you open the chest. Then, my friend, you’ll be swimming in riches.'

Karagiozis: (growing more and more doubtful)

'A dragon, a boat, and a 56-headed snake? This is starting to sound like one of those stories that only end with me getting a headache! And what about the angel? How’s the angel going to find me?'

Talking Tree-Snake:

'Oh, don’t worry about that. Angels know everything. You could hide under a rock in a hole in the ground, and they’d still find you. Trust me, my friend, you’re in good hands.'

(Karagiozis shrugs and exits, still muttering, as he heads east.)

Karagiozis:

'Why is it always the east? Why can’t the treasure ever be in the west where it’s closer? Or maybe just down the street?'

Scene 3: The Golden Apple Trick

Karagiozis: (shouting in frustration)

'Where is the sea? I’ve been walking forever, and all I see are endless trees! My legs are going to fall off! My throat’s so dry… Oh, a fountain! Finally, I’ll sit down, have a drink, and take a break.'

(As Karagiozis tries to cup some water in his hands, an invisible force pulls him into the water. Suddenly, he finds himself in a void, face-to-face with a giant dragon.)

Karagiozis:

'Ah?! Wait… where am I now?'

Dragon: (growling)

'Another human! What do you want?'

Karagiozis:

'Well, a talking tree told me that if I reached the edge of the land and defeated a dragon, I’d get a boat to the edge of the universe. And after that, I’d become the richest man in the world.'

Dragon: (indifferently)

'Okay.'

Karagiozis:

'So, I didn’t expect a fountain to be the edge of the land, but it looks like you’re the dragon I’m supposed to defeat. Come on then, let’s have ourselves a duel! Once I beat you, I’ll be the richest man alive!'

Dragon: (still indifferent)

'Alright, whatever.'

Karagiozis: (pausing, confused)

'What’s wrong with you? You don’t seem very excited about this. What’s bothering you? Why do you look so down?'

Dragon: (sighing dramatically)

'Imagine doing the same job for thousands of years, and never getting paid for it. I’ve been guarding this golden apple for 3,400 years. They say it grants immortality, and it must taste amazing, but I’m not even allowed to take a single bite.'

(One of the dragon’s heads sheds a tear.)

Karagiozis: (thinking to himself)

'Hmm… maybe we can solve this peacefully.'

Karagiozis:

'What if I could get you a golden apple? Would you let me take the boat to the edge of the universe then? Even if it’s not the golden apple you guard, it’s basically the same thing, right?'

Dragon: (perking up)

'Really? I could actually eat a golden apple?'

Karagiozis:

'You clearly don’t know me. I never lie, my friend.'

(grinning)

Dragon:

'Alright, deal.'

Karagiozis:

'Great! Wait here. I’ll be right back.'

(Karagiozis moves to the other side of the stage.)

Karagiozis:

'Hmm… I may have promised too much, but where am I supposed to find a golden apple? No worries! With my brilliance, I’ll figure this out.'

(he spots an apple tree and shakes its trunk, causing a few apples to fall to the ground)

'Ah, apples! Problem solved.'

(Karagiozis picks up the apples and finds some golden wildflowers. He crushes the petals and sticks them onto the apples.)

Karagiozis: (smirking to himself)

'Ah yes, only a true master of the wilderness knows where to find the rare golden petal… though the dragon needn’t know they grow everywhere.'

(he heads back to the dragon)

Karagiozis:

'Look, my friend, behold what I’ve brought for you!'

Dragon:

'Oh… golden apples! Incredible!'

Karagiozis:

'Is this what you were looking for?'

Dragon:

'I wouldn’t know. The golden apple I’ve been guarding for thousands of years has always been locked in a box. I’ve never even seen a real apple, let alone a golden one. But these look shiny enough, and I do know what gold looks like—it’s bright and tempting.'

Karagiozis: (thinking to himself, relieved)

'Perfect! This poor creature has never even seen an apple. I’ve totally got this in the bag.'

Karagiozis:

'Yes, these are genuine golden apples, I assure you. And I’ve brought you several, so you can enjoy them for a long time. Just be careful not to let your boss see them. Even gods don’t like it when mortals end up with more power than they have—especially when it comes to golden apples.'

Dragon: (gratefully)

'Thank you! You truly have extraordinary powers to make my dream come true. As promised, here’s your boat. Hop in and continue your journey. May fortune be with you.'

(The dragon magically summons a boat. Karagiozis climbs in and sails off, leaving the Earth and heading to the edge of the universe.)

Act 2

Scene 1: The 56-Headed Snake

(As the edge of the universe comes into view, a cosmic jungle appears, with a massive 56-headed snake looming within it.)

Snake: (hissing angrily as someone approaches)

Hissss!

Karagiozis:

'Well, here we go… now this is a real challenge. Looks like this snake won’t be as easy to fool as that dragon was. But there’s no other way around it—this thing’s blocking the path to the universe, and that means it’s blocking my path to becoming the richest man in the world!'

(he sighs dramatically)

'No choice but to fight…'

Snake: (snarling again)

Hissss!

Karagiozis:

'Alright, alright… let’s have ourselves a good old-fashioned duel then!'

(Karagiozis steps off the boat, slowly approaching the snake. The hydra-like creature looms over him, all 56 heads snapping, hissing, and spitting venom, each one more threatening than the last.)

Karagiozis: (muttering to himself nervously)

'Wow, I am definitely not a match for this thing. It could tear me to pieces any second. Time to use my brains before I become snake food. Maybe… if I can just turn its heads against each other, I can distract it long enough to escape.'

Karagiozis: (shouting up at the snake)

'Ah, Head 35! I see you’re as fierce as ever. It’s a shame Head 50 said you were the weakest…'

Head 35: (snapping back immediately)

'Don’t even try to turn us against each other, you shallow human! Many have tried that trick before, and they’re all in my belly now. We are one—you won’t find any petty competition among us!'

(the heads advance aggressively)

Karagiozis: (backing away, nervous)

'Well, that didn’t work… This is going to be tricky…'

(As the heads close in, Karagiozis quickly pulls off one of his shoes and tosses it straight into the mouths of several of the heads. The snake, caught off guard, starts choking on the shoe. While the snake is distracted, Karagiozis jumps back onto his boat, seizing the moment to escape through the passage.)

Snake: (writhing in pain, its long necks twisting and tangling together in confusion)

'Ugh… ahh! Wait, you… you trickster! Get back here!'

Karagiozis: (letting out a huge sigh of relief as he speeds off)

'Aha, a perfect knot. I bet not even a snake with 56 heads could untangle that one! Lucky for me, they’ll be too busy with my shoe for the next century…'

(he grins as he sails further into the universe)

One of the Snake’s Heads:

'Wait, Karagiozis, you forgot your shoe!'

(Karagiozis sails on, leaving the tangled snake behind.)

Scene 2: The Key from the Moon

Karagiozis: (grinning proudly to himself)

'Well, 56 heads and not one could outthink me! What can I say, some snakes just can’t handle a good story…'

(Up ahead, a soft, glowing light appears—it’s the Moon, large and luminescent, floating gently in the cosmic sea.)

Karagiozis: (eyes wide, staring at the Moon)

'Well, well, well! What do we have here? A floating cheese wheel? No… it’s the Moon! You’re even bigger than I thought! I’ve heard a lot about you, but I never expected to meet you in person, or… in celestial form!'

The Moon:

'Karagiozis, the one who tricks dragons and tangles the heads of snakes. You have traveled far to find me. Tell me, why do you seek the key?'

Karagiozis: (with a sly grin)

'Ah, you see, I’ve got this chest waiting for me somewhere, and, well… everyone knows a chest without a key is like a story without a punchline! Besides, I didn’t come all this way just to watch stars dance and planets twirl—I’ve got some treasure to unlock!'

The Moon: (her light flickering like a smile)

'A chest can hold many things—gold, secrets, or shadows. But what you seek may be more than mere treasure, Karagiozis. Do you think you are ready for what lies inside?'

Karagiozis: (smirking, puffing his chest out)

'Ready? Me? Of course, I’m always ready! After all, I outwitted a dragon and turned a snake into a knot with nothing but a shoe! I think I can handle a little chest and whatever's inside it!'

The Moon: (calmly, with a knowing tone)

'Very well. Farewell, Karagiozis. The key is yours, but the journey is far from over. Remember, sometimes the greatest treasure is the story itself.'

(The Moon stretches out a long beam of light, and from within it, a glowing key emerges, spinning slowly before floating toward Karagiozis.)

Karagiozis: (grinning as he grabs the key)

'A key from the Moon, huh? Now that’s what I call a souvenir!'

(Karagiozis exits from the left side, heading back.)

Act 3

Scene 1: The Search for the Chest

(Karagiozis, holding the glowing key, steps back into his magical boat and sails further into the vast, starry universe.)

Karagiozis: (muttering to himself as he sails through the cosmic expanse)

'A chest that only opens when I’m ready? Bah! I’m always ready! It’s the chest that needs to catch up. I didn’t get this far just to play guessing games…'

(he scans the horizon)

'Now, where do you think they hide a treasure chest in all this cosmic clutter? Behind a moon? Under a star? Or maybe there’s a big flashing sign I’ve missed—"Treasure This Way!"'

(he laughs at his own joke)

(As he continues sailing, the stars around him begin to swirl and shift, forming patterns, almost like a map. In the distance, Karagiozis notices a soft, golden glow—different from the stars, as if beckoning him closer.)

Karagiozis: (leaning forward, squinting)

'Aha! Now we’re getting somewhere! That must be it—the chest of treasures! And here I was, thinking the universe would make this difficult.'

(He steers the boat toward the light, which grows brighter as he approaches. The light reveals itself to be a floating island in the middle of space, shrouded in soft, golden mist. At the center of the island, resting on an ancient-looking pedestal, is the chest. It glows faintly, almost as if it’s waiting for him.)

Karagiozis: (grinning mischievously)

'Well, well, well! What do we have here? A treasure chest, just sitting out in the open like a present waiting to be unwrapped! This is almost too easy.'

(he steps off the boat and onto the island, cautiously approaching the chest)

'Alright, chest, let’s see what you’ve got.'

(He pulls the key from his pocket and moves closer to the chest. The air around him changes—growing heavier, filled with an unspoken tension. The chest is ancient, covered in strange markings that shift and shimmer as he looks at them.)

Scene 2: The Final Obstacle

(Karagiozis stands before the chest, ready to open it, when a gust of wind sweeps the golden mist around him. Out of the mist, Suriyel, the angel, appears, glowing with celestial light. Karagiozis instantly recognizes them as the one who left him the note, but he’s far from in the mood for pleasantries.)

Karagiozis: (annoyed, crossing his arms)

'Oh, it’s you again! What now? You’re going to tell me I can’t open the chest after sending me all the way across the universe?'

Suriyel: (stepping forward, calm and collected)

'Karagiozis, there is something important we must discuss before you open the chest.'

Karagiozis: (rolling his eyes, grumbling)

'Let me guess—“The chest holds great power,” “Not everything that glitters is gold,” blah blah blah. Just let me open it!'

Suriyel: (serious, voice firm)

'No, it’s not that. It’s much more serious. Before you open the chest, I must ask: why did you… not knock first?'

Karagiozis: (pausing, utterly confused)

'…What?'

Suriyel: (folding their arms, looking stern)

'You didn’t knock, Karagiozis. This is a sacred chest, and it’s basic cosmic etiquette to knock before attempting to open it. Didn’t your journey teach you anything about manners?'

Karagiozis: (incredulous, raising his hands)

'Manners? Knock? It’s a chest! Who knocks on a chest?!'

Suriyel: (huffing, offended)

'It’s not just any chest! This is a sacred, ancient artifact containing the secrets of the universe! You can’t just barge in like it’s some fruit stand in the market! You knock, and then maybe—maybe—the chest will deem you worthy.'

Karagiozis: (throwing his arms up in disbelief)

'You’ve got to be kidding me! I sailed through stars, tricked a dragon, tangled with a snake, and now you’re telling me the whole thing comes down to knocking?!'

(he starts pacing, muttering to himself)

'This is absurd! Knock on a chest! What’s next—should I curtsy for the dragon too?'

Suriyel: (sniffing, unimpressed)

'A little courtesy wouldn’t hurt. You mortals never appreciate the finer details of cosmic decorum. It’s like dealing with children.'

Karagiozis: (fuming, glaring at the angel)

'Children? You’re telling me I’m the problem? After everything I’ve done? I don’t need to knock on some old box to prove anything!'

Suriyel: (crossing their arms, standing firm)

'Well, if you’re not going to follow proper procedure, then I can’t let you open it.'

Karagiozis: (glaring even more)

'You’re seriously going to fight me over this? Over a knock?'

Suriyel: (firmly)

'Absolutely. Cosmic rules are rules, Karagiozis.'

(Tension builds as Karagiozis and Suriyel face off, both stubbornly standing their ground.)

Scene 3: The Fight Over Knocking

(As the argument about knocking on the chest escalates, Suriyel becomes more rigid in their insistence on cosmic etiquette, while Karagiozis grows increasingly frustrated and defiant.)

Suriyel: (sternly)

'I will say this one last time, Karagiozis—you cannot open the chest without knocking first! It is written in the cosmic rules!'

Karagiozis: (mockingly)

'Oh, cosmic rules! Cosmic shmoos! If I wanted to knock, I’d have become a door-to-door salesman! Just let me open the chest already!'

(Suriyel spreads their wings dramatically, blocking Karagiozis from getting any closer to the chest. Their voice booms with authority.)

Suriyel:

'You shall not pass until you follow proper procedure!'

Karagiozis: (growling in frustration)

'Enough with the rules! How about I knock you instead?'

(As Karagiozis tries to bypass Suriyel, he grabs a nearby wooden oar from his boat and swings it wildly, aiming to push Suriyel out of the way. However, in his frustration, Karagiozis isn’t paying attention.)

(Suriyel, in all their celestial glory, steps forward at the wrong moment. Karagiozis, mid-swing, accidentally slices right through one of Suriyel’s wings. The oar makes a comically exaggerated whoosh, and suddenly—snip—the wing falls off, flapping uselessly onto the ground.)

(Both Karagiozis and Suriyel freeze, staring at the severed wing on the ground. Karagiozis, wide-eyed, is stunned by what just happened.)

Karagiozis: (stunned, blinking)

'…Oh… oops. Didn’t mean to do that.'

Suriyel: (horrified, inspecting their missing wing)

'You… you cut off my wing! Do you have any idea how long it takes for these to grow back?!'

Karagiozis: (quickly trying to play it off, shrugging)

'Well, if you hadn’t been so stuck on cosmic knocking rules, this wouldn’t have happened! Besides, you’ve got another one! Just… I don’t know, flap the other wing a little harder. You’ll manage!'

(Suriyel stands in shocked silence, wings uneven, while Karagiozis sheepishly tries to hide his oar behind his back.)

Final Scene: The End of Karagiozis’ Journey

(After accidentally cutting off the angel’s wing during their fight, Karagiozis takes a step back from the chest. Suriyel, flustered and off-balance with only one wing, glares at him.)

Suriyel: (fuming, out of breath)

'You… you reckless mortal! You’ve ruined everything! I was trying to teach you the cosmic order!'

Karagiozis: (grinning, brushing it off casually)

'Teach me manners? All I learned is that wings don’t take kindly to oars. Who knew?'

(he dusts off his hands)

'But enough about that—now that we’ve gotten the formalities out of the way, it’s treasure time!'

(He moves back to the chest, brushing off the fight as if it was nothing. Suriyel, though weakened, steps forward one last time.)

Suriyel: (firmly, though with less confidence)

'Karagiozis… you’ve proven that you are clever, but not wise. You are not ready for what lies inside the chest. I cannot let you open it.'

Karagiozis: (laughing)

'Oh, really? After all this? You think I’m going to give up now?'

(he puts the key in the lock, determined to open it)

'You may have your rules, but I’ve got this key—and I’m getting that treasure, whether you like it or not!'

(But just as Karagiozis turns the key, something strange happens—the chest begins to glow, but instead of opening, it starts to disappear. The lock vanishes, the edges blur, and within moments, the entire chest dissolves into stardust, leaving Karagiozis standing there with his hand grasping at empty space.)

Karagiozis: (stunned, blinking in disbelief)

'Wait… where… where’s the treasure? What just happened?!'

Suriyel: (sighing, shaking their head)

'The treasure was never meant for you, Karagiozis. The chest was a test—one you failed.'

Karagiozis: (furious, throwing his hands up)

'Failed?! I didn’t come all this way just to watch the chest disappear! What kind of cosmic joke is this?!'

Suriyel: (with a slight, knowing smile)

'Not all stories end with riches, Karagiozis. Remember what the Moon told you?'

Karagiozis: (glaring, grumbling)

'Oh, don’t start with the “journey” talk again! I don’t need a lesson—I need gold! Silver! Anything shiny! You tricked me!'

Suriyel: (shrugging)

'Perhaps. But in the end, isn’t that what you do best? Tricking others? You’ve met your match, Karagiozis. Sometimes, even the trickster gets tricked.'

Karagiozis: (pausing, then grumbling)

'Well… this is just great.'

(he kicks at the ground, sulking)

'No treasure, no gold, no nothing. All that, and I don’t even get a souvenir.'

(He looks up at Suriyel, who is now inspecting their missing wing, clearly frustrated but calm. Karagiozis, in his usual fashion, can’t help but find humor in the situation.)

Karagiozis: (with a smirk)

'Well, at least I’ve got a story to tell. “The time I cut off an angel’s wing”—that’ll keep the village entertained for weeks!'

Suriyel: (shaking their head, amused despite themselves)

'Perhaps that’s your real treasure, Karagiozis.'

Karagiozis: (grinning, shrugging)

'Maybe. But you can’t buy dinner with a story, now, can you?'

(He starts walking back toward the magical boat, muttering to himself.)

Karagiozis: (muttering)

'Next time, I’m going after something a little more reliable—like a goose that lays golden eggs. At least those don’t vanish on you…'

(Karagiozis exits, sailing back into the cosmic sea.)

Artist in Residence

Yellow Brick, Athens, Greece
September 2024

Zichen Yin’s latest work explores the dynamic interplay between shadow theatre traditions, histories, and the geography of imagination. Her project centres on Karagiozis, the classic figure from Greek shadow theatre. In various versions of his story, Karagiozis is a shape-shifting hero with a thousand faces, yet is also faceless - a symbol composed of memories and stories, drifting between places. He is everything in-between.

For this exhibition, Zichen weaves a new fictional story in which Karagiozis embarks on an epic journey to the East. Employing a combination of painting, installation, and script, this experimental theatre project transforms the gallery space into a composite of temporal and spatial slices from the story, inviting viewers to walk through and experience this reimagined world.

This is the thousand and first version of Karagiozis‘ story, crafted by an outsider attempting to revisit his legend.

Le città sottili (Cities of the Light)Virtual Exhibition2022My bachelor’s dissertation “Mirror Stage: Exhibition Model and the Construction of Orientalism” attempts to discuss the influence of exhibition as a method of discourse construction on the cultural conception of "Orient", the change of observation mode it brought, and the aftermath in the field of contemporary art since the emergence of large-scale exhibitions. The discussion will focus on the contemporary art exhibition practice in East Asia (taking the large-scale exhibitions represented by biennials and triennials as examples), and explore the response of Asia to the spread of the large-scale exhibition system: Questioning the classification mode of "center and edge", exploring the new exhibition mode, calling for common memories, or participating in the writing of "self-orientalism" to some extent.
The results of my research will be presented as the exhibition "Le città sottili", which is divided into five sections, "Exodus," The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, "The imagined Taowu," Delta Laboratory "and" World as an exhibition, "attempting to tap into gaps in historical texts, construct parallel narratives with multiple timelines, and connect important time points and conceptual changes. In terms of the exhibition text, the concept of "Le città sottili" (city of the light) proposed in Calvino's Invisible Cities is used as a metaphor to discuss the subjectivity of cultural identity.
The work is collected by the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum.

The new fact received a meaning from that emblem and also added to the emblem a new meaning. Perhaps, Kublai thought, the empire is nothing but a zodiac of the mind's phantasms.

"On the day when I know all the emblems," he asked Marco, "shall I be able to possess my empire, at last?"

And the Venetian answered: "Sire, do not believe it. On that day you will be an emblem among emblems."

Trends are transcendental. They pass through historical moments and connect them to the continuity of the flow. Trends will continue to move forward through history, seeking further expression in the same heightened flux.

The ship of Theseus in front of us is endowed with more space than the objectively possessed space has, more appropriately, in following the expansion of our inner space. The ocean is a whole, its thoughts, memories, and dreams fused together, along the lines of history - conquest, past - collective memory, present - our present moment, it opens to the future. No medium of any kind can fully capture the truth. The conquerors will write about the body of the other and draw from it their own history. We may have never really been historians, but as poets of our time, our emotions can perhaps only be translated by the poetry of the past.

I just want to walk on an earth that has never been mapped..

HOW SHALL I EXPLAIN THE TACTILITY OF THE WORLD, IF YOU NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE
2023Video, 3’37’’Dimension Variable&#38;nbsp;
In the narrative form of a letter, the work "How shall I explain the tactility of the world, if you never had the chance to experience" presents a poetic meditation on the fleeting nature of our experiences. Through its use of found footage and a self-written poem, the film evokes a sense of nostalgia, loss, and absence, while also inviting viewers to reflect on how the spaces around us shape our perception.
